The Bangkok Metropolitan Region officially has around 15 million people. The number of undocumented immigrants from Cambodia, Laos, Burma and the other neighboring countries is huge though, so the actual number of inhabitants is much bigger. It’s a crazy city with different faces around every corner. You have high rise buildings all over the city instead of just the center, making it seem like Bangkok goes on forever.
Bangkok is the true definition of the urban jungle. Tons of snakes (cobras, boaconstricters), lizards (kamodo dragons, monitor lizards), bats and other interesting animals are crawling all over this sprawling metropolis. Thailand had a great flood a couple of years ago – some areas were as far as three meters underwater. This left hundreds of homeless animals looking for shelter in one of the most compact cities in the world. We heard that at one spot after the flood, there were dozens of Kamodo dragons wandering around the spot.
This is definitely a city of extremes, very much like Mexico City, New York City and any of the other cities that have 15+ million population. There is something going on all times of the day and a place for everyone to fit in.
