City skateboarding is hard. It takes a special breed of skater to purposefully skate spots with shitty ground, cracks in the ground, huge security guards, or any of the other obstacles that might stand in the way. Joel and Ryan personify street skateboarding with an appetite for the weird, wild and photogenic. While some prefer perfect concrete, designated areas and obstacles that were meant to be skated, these two are prime examples of the guys that keep street skating where it started: IN THE STREETS!
Joel Maxey is a 26 year old visual artist. He is a writer and street photographer, as well as a web designer and a slew of other things. He lives out of the back of his VW bus and rents a dark room in the international district. Ryan Stangland is a 32 year old UPS driver who has a four and a six year old and wife at home. He works hard and plays dad all week and then absolutely shreds the streets come Sunday.
We had a blast cruising through the streets, searching every corner for another possible clip. Sit back and relax and see what we found together. Remember, 95% of these spots are right around the corner from each other. Keep it real, and keep it city!
