Tomas “Koala” Scicchitano is one of the top dog Argentinos. His love for the street and street skateboarding is unrivaled, evidenced by the way that he skates and the spots he chooses. Koala never picks the easy route and is constantly learning new tricks. This Mar Del Plata native recently moved to Buenos Aires about a year ago and has been killing it with the crew since he arrived.

Brendan O’Brien is a rare breed of human. This guy left Albuquerque, New Mexico (ISSUE No. 3 ALBUQUERQUE) when he was 19 years old in search of a better life and more cost effective education. Nearly 8 years later, Brendan is only a couple semesters away from graduating from medical school where he studies to be a doctor for free in Buenos Aires. And this school is not some shabby run down school like the big-wigs in the US would want you to think. This public medical school is one of the most renowned in South America and is one of the most prestigious medical degrees you can have in Argentina. Not only to mention that, but this guy can do whatever he wants on a skateboard. Even when he thinks that he is not going to land the trick, he rolls away smoothly. When he jumps, the board comes with him and never leaves his feet. His quick snap and precise movements are some of the best that we have seen all over the world. But the reality is simple, this fool is about to be a doctor and could care less about the stress and shit you have to go through to be a pro skater. This guy could do it, but he has decided to follow a different passion and a different course. I think that is something we all can respect. But holy fuck Brendan, you rip.

The act of skating and making jewelry are quite different, but then again quite similar when it comes to technical skill, precision and creativity. Santiago first started designing and creating jewelry when he was approximately 12 years old. He started at a school that taught different trades and quickly fell in love with playing and forming the metals into different shapes. As he got older, his focus started shifting more and more towards skating. He took a break from his jewelry for a number of years but has recently started creating again.

Skateboarding in Argentina is different from other places. While they have security guards all over the city, the cops don’t give a shit. You can keep trying your trick until security tries to physically stop you because you know that the cops will not come and do anything. This makes for a unique game of cat and mouse where you run back 2 or 3 different times, trying to get one last shot at the precious trick that you have your mind set on. When you win, it’s heaven. When you loose, you come back again tomorrow. This is the spirit of the skater.

Buenos Aires is culture. This city is a visual playground full of surprises, colors, shapes and people of all kinds. The center feels like an European capital and the outskirts feel like LA or any major modern city sprawled out into the abyss through a network of never ending highways. All of these elements combined create a unique atmosphere for skateboarding and for anyone who is obsessed with documenting the world around them and the things that are going on.

Luciano Cristobal is one of the true OGs of Argentina. He has been on the scene since before the scene existed and has been killing it all the way. His family is well known in Argentina for their culinary endeavors as well. His brother owns one of the most popular restaurants in the San Telmo neighborhood and had a cooking show on television until recently. This was an obvious choice for our Skaters Cookbook section and we are proud to have one of the masters from Argentina show us how to prepare a proper guiso de lentejas.

Skating in Buenos Aires is not always easy, but it is always rewarding. The streets can be rough and security can be a bitch, but the thing that makes skating in Buenos Aires so great is the skaters. The crews are strong and there is little to no beef between anybody, which is different than what we have experienced in other cities. With six or seven subway lines, five or six lines of regional train and more than 200 bus lines, the public transport will get you almost anywhere you want to go. The best part is that the tickets are less than 50 cents for each ride. With fruit shops and corner stores everywhere, you are never too far away from water or refreshments while on the session.

“Migue” comes from the center of Buenos Aires. His childhood home is only a few steps from the geographical and political heart of Argentina. He grew up skating all of the government buildings and plazas full of historical monuments. His neighborhood, San Telmo, is known for its rough, cobblestone streets, and lurkers waiting in the shadows for unsuspecting tourists once the sun starts to go down.

Fede Gonzalez and the boys from Quilmes are your classic definition of skate rats. They eat, breath and sleep skateboarding. They have been roaming Buenos Aires and the world for the last 10 or 15 years, filming, skating and living it up with gigantic smiles on their faces every step of the way. Not only do they all skate and most professionally, they also all play with cameras and shoot photos and make videos of their adventures.

Buenos Aires is not only the cultural and political capital of Argentina but also the center of the Argentinian skate scene. Built like a European city, this nearly 500 year old metropolis was once the richest port city in the world due to extensive silver trade. It has had lots of ups and downs and has gone through many changes in the past centuries. Full of plazas, antique and modern architecture, rich and poor neighborhoods, Buenos Aires has just about any different kind of terrain that you can think of.
